This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Although I am first-year teacher, I am not new to the struggles that my students will face throughout this school year.

Last year, my students did not have any preforming arts class- no dance, no instrumental music, no choir, no theater.

For students that will not experience these classes outside of school, this is unacceptable. This year, I am being given the opportunity to change the lives of these students through dance education. My class will incorporate music with movement in order to pursue topics of general dance, world dance, dance technology, and more.

Through student teaching in this district, I have seen the joy that dance education brings these students. Dance gives them a place to be creative, expressive, and to discover and grow their interests. With your help, my students would be able to experience and thrive through arts education.

My Project

With my students not having had any preforming arts class these past few years, I will be starting this years P-8 dance program with very few materials.

In order to create a well-rounded dance experience, we will be using a combination of recorded music and live music to accompany our movement throughout the year.

The students need a boombox and auxiliary cord for playing Cds and iPods as well as various percussion instruments (a drum, a tambourine, sticks, shakers) to accompany one another with live music. All students will also use these instruments to create songs to their choreography during our world dance unit.

In order to create a well-rounded program, we will also be focusing on strengthening our muscles through stretching and yoga. Fitdeck cards will allow the students to learn, lead, and incorporate these various phrases into their everyday practices. Yoga is also what I will be using to start class with my special needs students.
