DANCE2! Dancing Absolutely Necessary for Children's Education
My students need dance and performances for study because dance and the arts are crucial to children's education. It also supports literacy, reading and writing.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need to experience expanding their imaginations through the joy of dance. Exploring their creativity through movement and how dance enhances learning are crucial to enriching students' minds. Now more than ever the arts must play a role in education!
We're a NYC Title I public school and our school community is international.
Our children speak many languages and the parents of our students look to education to realize the American dream. Schools have the responsibility of providing the best possible education if our students are to acquire a 21st century education, and that includes a commitment to the arts. The many cultures that are included in our school appreciate the role of dance in sharing culture, and so including dance within the school day is so important. The cost of participating in arts programs outside the school day is beyond the financial grasp of the students we serve and budget cuts due to the economic challenges of today threaten to eliminate the programs we have maintained over the years. Performances for study with the Joyce Theater have been part of our school for over 20 years but the program's costs put the program beyond our reach this year for the first time.
My Project
If we are able to bring dance to our children through the Joyce Theater Dance Education Program, students will be able to learn about different cultures through the lens of creative movement. Imagine that our children could continue to choreograph dance based on performances they have studied with our dance artist. They would be able to express themselves through dance and experience the joy of movement as they work collaboratively with our visiting artist. What better way to build audiences than to give students the opportunity to appreciate movement both on stage and in the classroom. Writing and communication skills, learning about cultures through dance, and giving voice to feelings through movement are all critical components of learning that inform all subjects.
If we do not provide this form of learning to every child, how will our students experience this important contribution to their education?
Dance2 is Absolutely Necessary for Children's Education, too! When financially times are challenging, it is incumbent upon us to rise to the occasion and support the arts. Our students and their families look to us for the vision and hope to support dance programs in schools. We hope DonorsChoose.org agrees.
