This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If music tames the savage beast, then dancing also tones him. We need a high quality sound system for indoor and outdoor use in PE. Using dance and aerobics makes improving cardiovascular strength both fun and exciting. Students love hearing their favorite jams while they train and get fit!

Our school has a title I designation.

92% of students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Despite this, students at my school have shown that they are hard working and motivated. Many of my students do not have structured time outside of school designated to improving their physical fitness, so the work we do in PE is critical. With childhood obesity already at epidemic levels, I take my role as a leader in this fight very seriously, and my students have shown they are up to the challenge.

My Project

We love our music in PE. Regardless of the lesson being taught, my students and I are always jamming to the beats. Students request songs and any activity or game we are doing instantly gets a shot of energy. Having a quality, portable Bose docking station will be a vast improvement to the old Sony boombox (with tape decks) we currently use. I love using the iPod to select and play music and having a brand new one with lots of memory and a new battery will provide all my classes endless high quality music to inspire and motivate them. We do an extensive dance unit in PE and I am going to be doing an aerobics unit this year that will involve students creating their own aerobics routines set to whatever song they choose. Our new docking station and iPod will be perfect for this.

Students move when they hear music they like.

And the more they move, the better. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease and a sedentary lifestyle are scary-big problems in America. As a physical education teacher, I take great pride in the enormous potential I have to inspire and lead my students and their families to a lifetime love of fitness. Connecting music with physical activity is a highly effective way of inspiring a lifetime love of fitness.
