My Project
In preparation for the Lunar New Year, I am introducing my students to dances from Asia.
One such engaging dance is the Tinikling, a traditional dance from the Philippines that is not only fun, but also a great tool for teaching my students the concept of triple meter (3/4 time), and provides a healthy dose of cardiovascular activity to boot!
Tinikling involves a dynamic interplay between the "clickers" (two students who tap and slide poles on the ground in rhythmic coordination) and one or more dancers who step over and in between the moving poles.
Beyond the joy of participation, dancing the Tinikling develops cardiovascular and muscle endurance, as well as coordination and agility, while being a clicker develops teamwork and communication to synchronize movements with the dancers. Alternating between dancer and clicker doubles the learning and the fun for all students and amplifies the enjoyment of this cultural and physically enriching activity!
