Dance Performance Costumes: Setting Our Department Up for Success

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The dancers at my high school are steadfast about making their next performance their best performance. When I first got to the school, with no dance program in sight, the students were happy to be able to dance, but were only willing to do so if I guiding them every step of the way. Now, five years later, the students are creating their own works, leading their own research, and being steadfast about making their productions their next best productions.
The dancers research prominent choreographers who
have shaped the art of dance and choreography. We look at their works of art and construct composition in their style of dance. We will also cover health and body maintenance as a
performing artist. We learn about the accompanying music,
the people from which the dance originated, and a chance to perform some of these works during the annual dance concert. The cultures we study include traditional West African, European Folk dances, Latin dances, Afro-Caribbean, Southeast Asian, and Popular American dances from the 1860s-early 2000s.
I make sure I acknowledge the cultures my student represent as well as offer them a chance to explore cultures they've never encountered.
My Project
This year our dancers have went full force to bring the most independent and unique production for our Spring Dance Concert. The dancers have worked hard on music selection, pertinent themes, culturally engaging choreography, and a powerful performance presence.
The one thing that they have decided that they need to round out their performance is costumes!
In the past, they have graciously stepped on stage knowing that their hard work can transcend the dress code that they will perform in. However, they wanted to set the tone that their hard work also includes the external dress that brings a performance together.
Students would love to bring their ideas to life on stage but need your help to bring it to fruition!
