Dance Floors: Improve Safety for Developing Dancers
Help me give my students the dance studio they deserve! This flooring will provide joint support to keep students safe as they explore movement and artistic expression.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students love to dance. For the first two and a half years that the dance program has existed we have been dancing on tile over concrete. While dance can be done anywhere, dancing on such a hard surface can lead to unnecessary stress on students' developing joints overtime and potential injury. Currently, students wear their sneakers to reduce impact on their joints, but many styles such as West African and Modern call for bare feet and many others can be more effectively without shoes as well. Tile floors are also not appropriate for tap shoes as they can damage each other and are far too slippery.
The students at my school deserve to explore movement and develop their artistic voices without risk of injury.
Having appropriate flooring reduces impact on students' joints as well as provides a softer landing if they happen to fall. The foam tiles provide a cushioned sub-floor and the rolls of Marley provide a slip-resistant surface. With your help students will be able to confidently explore more styles and develop the skills to flourish as dancers.
Dance is a way to build connection and students enjoy coming in at recess to dance and helping younger classes. The dance studio has also been used for after school dance, cheer, and girl's boxing as well as family events such as yoga. Upgrading our floors will impact the whole student body as well as our larger community.
