My students need daily writing journals for the school year. These journals help students improve grammar, punctuation, and handwriting skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first grade teacher in a city school in Illinois. My students live in low-income households from a beautifully diverse area of Chicago. Hispanic, African-American, Arab, and Caucasian families send their children to our school. Many of my students are bilingual and are raised in homes with single parents, multiple siblings and/or grandparents. They begin first grade steps behind due to limited exposure to English oral language experiences that improve grammar and vocabulary knowledge.
Every year I witness the magic of becoming a reader in each child.
I begin the school year excited to meet the eager, active children that will occupy my classroom. The students learn to understand how reading "works", to love books, and to write and speak like their favorite authors.
My Project
The Correct the Sentence! Daily Journal will allow students to practice skills learned in my Language Arts lessons. We will be detectives looking for mistakes every morning. Rather than the traditional method of writing a sentence on the board and having volunteers correct the errors, every student will have a book to write in. Six year old children are still learning to read and print. By having a written model in front of them, this will eliminate some of the struggle with the mechanics of writing. As a class, we can focus on errors and discuss English language rules.
Daily morning grammar practice sets the tone for the classroom.
This is a place where we investigate our oral and written language. We question why use adjectives, pronouns, and punctuation. We are on a path to grow as readers, writers, and communicators!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
