My Project
My 75 fifth graders are a great group of kids that have a wide range of needs that I try to meet in order to help them be more successful overall. Physical needs, learning disabilities, and social/emotional needs are all struggles that we encounter daily in class. When Covid happened, my students were much younger and it made it almost impossible for them to learn how to properly interact with others, control emotions, and be successful with learning. It's no surprise that most kinds have been learning on the computer with games and curriculum that haven't always been positive and beneficial.
Having different sitting options in my room to help those who are struggling with being still use yoga ball chairs, wobble cushions or stools, will cut back on distractions and feeling the need to walk around so often.
The variety of activities, positive social interactions and problem solving are things they need to learn as life skills. I can teach any subject at any given time, hence the math practice/activities or maps and headphones to help them listen to stories if they have issues reading or watching assigned videos. I don't have a lot of storage and no shelving in my classroom, so the bookshelf and being able to label and keep everything organized is essential.
Technology access is not always a bonus and comes with a lot of distractions. Students being behind grade level, having self doubt from bullying, and of course being sedentary most of the day whether it's at home or school, are just a few issues we deal with. I've been working with my students on trying to promote cooperation in person, team building, self esteem/care, and advocating for themselves to positively meet their needs... which are actually life skills for a more successful future.
