This year marks my fourth year teaching at a Title I school in Virginia. Over time, I’ve learned that when students have the tools they need, there are fewer setbacks—and more opportunities to grow and succeed. Unfortunately, every school year, only about 40% of my students come prepared with their own supplies. For the rest, I rely on what the school can provide—or I purchase materials out of my own pocket.
Last year, I created a project to provide crayons, scissors, and pencils.
The impact was immediate and powerful. When students had their own materials, they became more confident, motivated, and ready to take ownership of their learning.
Dry erase markers and erasers are especially important in our classroom. We use them daily during whole-group lessons for spelling, writing sentences, drawing, and solving math problems. These tools help students engage, participate, and practice in real time—and I’ve seen incredible academic growth as a result.
Laminating pouches and colored paper allow me to create long-lasting and engaging instructional materials. These resources will be stored in a bench rack with bins, which also supports student independence by keeping materials organized and accessible during individual work.
Glue is another essential item, used regularly for hands-on activities that reinforce learning. Cleaning wipes and spray help keep our classroom clean and safe—a key part of maintaining a focused and healthy learning environment.
I’m also requesting a small couch for students who struggle with behavior or need a quiet space to regulate their emotions. This provides them with a calm and supportive area where they can reset and return to learning.
With your support, my students will have access to the materials they need to learn, grow, and succeed with confidence everyday and make a lasting impact on their academic journey.
