Help me give my students strategies and tools for building math fluency through daily practice and teacher instruction using hand2mind Daily Math Fluency Kit for Kids.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach first grade in an urban school setting in which all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most students come to school prepared to learn, even though they do not always have the materials they need.
My first grade students are excited about school, eager to learn, make new friends, and achieve goals.
Even though they are currently learning online, they are still very enthusiastic about school! They get very excited when they realize the progress they have made, like when their reading level increases and they are able to read books at a higher level, or complete addition and subtraction equations that they previously found difficult.
My Project
A number talk is a short, daily exercise led by a teacher that helps students build number sense, and the ability to play with numbers. This enables students to both perform calculations quickly and visualize problem solving. It involves teacher modeling and demonstration, along with student discussion and practice.
The hand2mind Daily Math Fluency Kit for Kids provides math talk lessons (similar to number talks) and manipulatives to demonstrate a variety of ways to compose and take numbers apart.
I feel that this kit will help my students have a better understanding of the strategies that are being taught in the current math text that is used in our school district. The daily math talks, because of their short length and daily frequency, will give students the opportunity to practice and revisit these strategies more often than they currently do. My hope is that my current students will have a greater math fluency than those from previous years. Although I am currently teaching remotely via computer, I feel that these materials can definitely and effectively be used in a virtual teaching context.
