Daily Living skills is one area that students with Autism need to be independent. Simple meal preparation and cooking skills are one focus in this area. Students learning skills in this area will learn to be more independent at home and learn skills that may help in job placements beyond school, as well as develop a level of self-worth and independence.
The goal of this project is to make sure students have access to the tools and skills they need to identify and use tools to prepare a simple meal.
The bowls, utensils, knives, mixer, drawer organizer and other items requested in this project provide students access to expand their knowledge of basic meal preparation.
Some of the skills that will be taught during simple meal preparation and cooking using these requested resources are:
1. The importance of keeping a clean work area.
2. How to safely use kitchen utensils.
3. Follow a recipe card.
4. Following kitchen safety practices.
5. Social skills and table etiquette when sharing meals with individuals.
6. Identifying kitchen utensils needed for meal preparation.
7. Skills for gathering items needed for a meal.
8 Measuring skills.
9. Pride and self-worth for completing a task.
10. Skills needed to assist with job placement.
11. Independence at home or in a group home setting.
The better prepared students are before leaving school, the more opportunities that will be available to them. As students develop more independence, they are able to live more independent lives and help in their home environment. The more self-worth that can be instilled, negative behavior will decrease, and students will have a feeling of self-confidence.
My students are special because of the different personalities, trust and innocence they bring to the class each day. They trust me to attend to their needs and teach skills needed for every day life.
