Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have come into high school behind grade level but these students are not quitters. We have a strong culture of achievement and encourage all students to prepare for and apply to college.
Were you to walk down the halls of my school, you might think you are in the United Nations.
We have students from five continents (and more than that from a number of islands) representing a diverse array of languages and cultures. My students are a mix of new immigrants and native-born Americans. All of them want to succeed.
My Project
A key part of almost all my lessons is allowing access to technology, to allow students a variety of ways to make connections with math and quantitative topics. We have used Nspire CX calculators for years, and now these handheld calculators are showing their age. Some of them have "stuck" keys that don't operate, others have cracks in their screens.
My proposal would purchase some new calculator units, so I can cycle the older, not fully functional units out of service.
I don't want any impediments to student learning. They should not have to worry if there is a crack right over the important part of a graph, or whether they need to struggle just to enter a number correctly.
Having new calculators will help relieve this issue.
