Cycle Into Science: Watching Chicks Crack Into Life!
My students need a poultry egg incubator, a life cycles instant learning center with learning games, a life cycles theme book library, a life cycles theme box with different learning activities, and fertilized frog eggs.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a small agricultural community near a prison. This unique community brings quite a mix of students into my classroom. The vast majority of my students live in poverty, but there are 2 or 3 middle class students in the mix. Some of my students live in a field worker's camp that shares a fence with the prison yard. Needless to say, many of my little six-year-old children not only live in poverty but also are exposed to some unsavory characters and their questionable exchanges through the razor-wire topped chain link fence.
I feel a strong responsibility to prepare these students for an educational career that leads to college. Empowerment through education is the main reason that I became a teacher. Many students arrive in college deficient in an understanding of basic science. First grade students are required to learn about life cycles. Other than the textbook that is much too difficult for my students to read, the only materials I have to teach life cycles are a computer to download worksheets and a few books about science that I can make photocopies of.
Of course, the BEST way to teach science is to provide students with the opportunity to interact with the subject/materials. I am so excited to teach about how how different things grow! Frogs, butterflies, chickens, plants. . . they all live and grow so differently. Funding this project will provide my students with an incubator to actually watch chicks hatch. With this project, they could amazingly watch a frog go from egg to tadpole . . . and then actually GROW LEGS in front of their eyes! Can you imagine what magic this would be for a first grader? This project also would include opportunities to support student learning through books and activities. Students would have opportunities to discuss the subject matter, apply, and review it.
I want to inspire my students to become life-long learners with an interest in science. You can help these children prepare for college. College preparation isn't just learning vocabulary words for the SAT exam. College preparation involves fostering learners who are interested and inspired, learners who know that education is the key to a better life. Please help my students gain an interest in science through this project.
