Cyanotypes for Middle School Art Students

Help me give my students the chance to experience cyanotypes using Jaquard Cyanotype products!

My Project

Please consider helping my middle school students learn about and make Cyanotypes. Cyanotypes will teach some chemistry, history, composition, and photography. The Cyanotype process was invented in 1842, and is a non-silver photographic printing process. Today Jacquard sells a Cyanotype set of two bottles (A&B). Each bottle of chemical is mixed with water. Equal parts of A and B are mixed, and a thin coat is brushed onto artists paper and allowed to dry in the dark. Once dry, students place and arrange objects of their choosing (such as flowers, leaves, feathers, scissors, etc.) on top of the coated paper. Their arrangement is then exposed to the Ultra Violet light of the sun or UV light boxes in the classroom.

The exposed paper is developed/washed in water and hung to dry.

The result is a beautiful Prussian Blue negative image. This process allows students of the digital age to experience some of the basics of photography. Cyanotypes are fun to make, easy to do, safe, and a process that students might not get the chance to try in high school or later in life.
