Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Dissecting frogs, splitting chromosomes, making cells out of marshmallows and gumdrops . . . these are just a few of the science projects my students have tackled this year. I currently teach science to 6th and 7th grade students in Alum Rock outside downtown San Jose, CA. As a low-income school district, our schools, and specifically our lab equipment, are lacking in some basic tools. For example, right now we are using plastic butter knives instead of scalpels to examine our dissection specimen. I know my students would love to have real scientist's tools. Therefore I am requesting enough sets of the science toolkits and scalpels to provide for my class of 34 students. These tools will definitely heighten the students' interest and respect for science and my class. I am looking forward to our big end-of-year project. We will be dissecting sheep hearts. This experience will be our culmination for our biology unit. I know the students are excited to begin the project. I would love to be able to provide them with proper resources to work with their heart. Thank you for considering our proposal.
