Do you remember when you had a teacher who took a subject and elevated it to the next level? Do you remember when you had a teacher who took something you could never envision embracing, especially something revolting, and made it an experience that changed how you approach learning in the future?
A majority of our school population lives at or below poverty level.
Many are children of immigrant parents, single parent homes, foster families, group homes and, in some cases, are homeless. Many will never have the tangible tools or experiences to allow them to succeed in a fast paced world, such as the use of a personal computer, or the ability to engage in activities that foster and promote visual hands-on learning. Our school is committed to exposing and educating them with a passion that we would hope surpasses their daily expectations. Using technology and an incredible sense of personal initiative, we would like many doors to be opened to them and, as a result, awaken a natural sense of curiosity towards the world around them and their own selves, especially within studies of anatomy. It is the exposure to such that creates a passion for further learning and a sense of self-discovery to be awakened in many of their minds.
My Project
My students would love to embrace these specimens and tools to complement their study of invertebrate and vertebrate anatomy. Sheep eyeballs allow for the most comprehensive and complementary study of human anatomy with respect to the eye. Echinoderms have an amazing vascular system kids become amazed by. I have personally and financially vowed to allow students the opportunity to become passionate about dissections and create connections that physically complement our biological studies. I would like for each student to personally feel an investment in their own dissection specimen, and funding for this project would result in this unique opportunity. In addition, I would like for students to individually overcome any inhibitions they may possess towards dissections and the use of various tools involved in such. This dissection will be a continuation of exposure towards anatomical studies(the first, a squid dissection, will be conducted in the late fall).
The ability to compare and contrast between these two enriching experiences will be incredibly rewarding.
If you never have had the opportunity to visit an inner city school and meet with teachers who have a passion and zeal for creating vivid learning experiences, then you most certainly cannot know the impact an experience such as this one can result in when awakening a child's natural sense of curiosity. Let my students show you the impact of bringing them to the "Cutting Edge" of Science.
