I teach 10th graders in an inner city Chicago high school. Our school is infested with gangs, drug use, and violence, but somehow my students continue to overcome and focus on their academics. My students are enrolled in a program for children who were too old to stay in elementary school but not academically prepared for high school. They've made fantastic strides in their year and a half in my program and are very hard workers.
Unfortunately, my school has limited funds to provide us with supplies. I often use hands on activities in my class because many of my students are kinesthetic learners who need to feel and see what they are learning. Unfortunately, we often do not have the simplest supplies needed for those activities, included scissors, glue and rulers. Student choice is a big part of my teaching, which means several different groups may be working on different things at different times. This requires a lot of my attention, but I end up wasting a lot of time searching for our few pairs of scissors and glue sticks and trying to figure out which students should get to use them.
I need glue sticks, scissors, and rulers to keep in individual buckets at each student table. This way, when they choose a hands-on activity, the supplies they need will always be at hand.
