This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to participate, learn and experiment. They come from a low-income under-served part of Los Angeles. 93% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school is predominantly Latino, with a smaller population of African American and Filipino students.

My students love to learn by doing.

They make hypotheses and connections, do experiments and report back on the results. They understand the engineering cycle, and they work hard to continuously improve their results.

Most of all, my students are hard workers. They always impress me by how resourceful they are. They know that college and career readiness are their goals, and they are ready to change the odds in the inner city.

My Project

For the last three years, I have run my engineering class as an open space where students can build projects openly. Students can build freely, but they need help with one dangerous part - cutting wood. To help them, I use an electric saw - but I do almost all my cuts with a simple jigsaw - and that jigsaw has had it.

We need a miter saw that can help cut deeper, larger pieces of wood.

Students are getting more ambitious in their projects, and they need me to be able to quickly and accurately make cuts so their designs fit together nicely.

Your donation would help us purchase a new jigsaw, a new miter saw and a miters stand, to help me make the cuts that students need.
