it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
". . . we depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity." (National Standards for Arts Education) My students love art. When they are involved in an art project, they are empowered. They are often empowered with the most human feelings of caring for and sharing with each other.
Our students attend a small, urban, well-loved public elementary school that has been in this community for many years.
Students come from many parts of the world and arrive on our doorstep, sometimes with very little schooling at all and not speaking English. Some of them are refugees. Some others are traumatized by inner-city life. We dedicate ourselves to providing them the best we can in our Spanish-English bilingual school that has a vision of graduating students who are resilient, and culturally aware life-long learners. They are an inquisitive, lively group of students who work hard on academic subjects. However, many of them often feel a bit lost and alone in a strange difficult world. I hope to empower these wonderful students with art. We will value their families' and other families’ cultural backgrounds through art. We hope to help all of them to a bright future ahead.
My Project
Your donation for a class set of scissors will allow my students to have fun with cutting and pasting activities. They will be creating 3-D art structures of their own design. They will be cutting paper for weaving in imitation of Guatemalan and African cloth weaving. They will also be making collages from magazine pictures they have cut out. The scissors will be used in so many different ways with different age students. The versatile markers will be used in a variety of ways also. They will be creating and coloring bookmarks, and making beautiful art pieces at the same time as they learn about the color wheel and warm and cool colors.
Through the kind of artwork I will teach with your donated supplies, the refugee children and all the students will be empowered to honor their families and their cultures.
Art can be a way of healing. I hope these projects will help the students to heal from the traumas they have experienced and be better prepared to take on all the challenges of learning a new language and a new world. Your donation can make this possible.
