This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is made up of 24 students representing the diverse communities of East Boston. The students in my classroom are of diverse ability levels and many are English Language Learners.

Our students are deeply interested in music, but we lack the ability to sustain a music program that will meet their needs.

East Boston is a community made up primarily of immigrant families from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. Our diverse students love to share their culture and learn about the culture of others - especially through music!

My Project

I am requesting support to purchase 4 "build your own cajons" for our Afro-Latin American music program. The cajon is a wooden percussion instrument (similar to a drum) that is played throughout Latin America. The cajon is especially important for Cuban, Peruvian, and Brazilian music genres. It can be used for learning essential rhythms and for learning music fundamentals.

Your donation will help support a hands-on music education experience!

These cajons will be assembled, decorated, and played by our music program students during the 2019-2020 school year and beyond! Being able to build the cajons will engage hands on learners and also demonstrate the importance of respecting the work it takes to build the instruments that we use for our program.
