Curtain Call! Help us Improve our Scholar Auditorium
My students need a new stage curtain so that they can perform with pride in the auditorium and give merit to their accomplishments and their school community.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the wonder you felt when the stage curtain was pulled back in your school auditorium? Do you remember the pride you felt the first time you performed on stage? Help our students replace their old tattered and torn stage curtain so that they too can feel proud of their environment!
Our school is Title I, Pre-K-8th grade located in NYC, in a high poverty area.
Approximately 97% of our students receive free breakfast and/or lunch. The community has fallen victim to a great increase in crime and drug abuse. Most of our students have already been through pressing circumstances before they even arrive at our door at 8A.M.. Many of our students are tardy and arrive with heavy burdens at young ages which makes concentrating on academics a daily struggle. Our staff works diligently to create an environment rich with incentives for learning. We have new leadership in our school which has even furthered the push to create a safe and nurturing physical environment for all students. That said, we still feel the dwindling budget affecting our classrooms and our school. Many charter schools around us have new furniture and new facilities further devastating our student body as they ask "Why not us?".
My Project
We are requesting funds to repair our auditorium curtain which is badly torn. We are looking forward this year to many assemblies and award ceremonies, incentives at our school for improved attendance and scholar achievement. We will also be putting on a first annual talent show, a holiday gathering and several graduation ceremonies: for Kindergarten, 5th and 8th grade. We want our student/scholars to shine with pride and happiness at their achievements, not to be embarrassed by the appearance of their school environment. If we are able to award our students with a new stage curtain they will learn to take pride in their environment, to care for their surroundings, and they will learn that accomplishment is to be praised, not side-stepped. As their art teacher I would love for our permanent surroundings to be as vibrant and cared for as their artworks. To encourage community pride we are also working with a local business to craft the curtain. They will be our vendor.
We are located in NYC, one of the great cities for performance and theater.
Our school is only few subway train rides from Broadway, but our students have few opportunities to see the great stages there. They should, at the very least, be introduced to a velvet curtain in their school. They should be proud to perform, to take credit for their accomplishments by standing on stage, at a podium; they should be able to sing, dance, cheer, or step with pride. Please answer our curtain call!!!!
