My Students
Next year I'll be looping with my students to 5th grade after being with them in 4th. I teach 2 blocks of reading and writing. My classroom is filled with a diverse student population. Ethnicities are numerous and poverty is high.
However, the kids don't see these statistics nor do they care, which is just how I like it.
We come together from all walks of life to LEARN! We enrich each other's lives just by being ourselves. We read about friendship, adventure, love, and even pain. We write about our experiences and emotions. We devour words and spill them out again.
My Project
There’s a reason we’ve stopped wearing blue eyeshadow and rocking socks with sandals – we all like to stay relevant. Students demand the same of their literature. As we study the genre of nonfiction in 5th grade, all-about books on turtles and tornadoes can only take me so far. Students want to read about Steph Curry leading the Warriors to their first NBA championship since 1975. Or Misty Copeland becoming the first African American Female Principal Dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. TIME for Kids provides that for us.
Staying civically relevant is a habit we’d like students to continue into adulthood.
Reading TIME for Kids allows us become better readers while also becoming more informed citizens. The advancement of society , keeping power in check, and progressing prosperity all hinge on people being aware of, and involved in, their community.
In the upper elementary grades, students go from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn.’ Nonfiction can pose challenges, as content vocabulary can be unfamiliar and concepts are often abstract. Engaging, interesting topics can help motivate students to push through these challenges. TIME for Kids is a great solution for a myriad of reasons!
IMPACT: These 30 - 28 week subscriptions will serve 2 blocks of 29 students and be shared with a teammate who also serves 58 students.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
