My classroom consists of thirteen students grades K-4. It is a self-contained, low-incidence special education room. The individuals are diverse learners that have moderate to severe disabilities. Many of my students come from low-income homes. The class is diverse, coming from different backgrounds and cultures. No matter the challenging situations and difficulties they face, they continue to come to school happy and eager to learn; they are amazing!
We are a Chicago Public School on the southwest side of Chicago.
Currently, our district is in a financial crisis. Because of this, the school lacks funding to appropriately support our classroom and students. With a little help from Donors Choose, we can get tools to support, enhance, and facilitate learning in a productive way!
My Project
As my school district continues to be in financial peril, my school's budget continues to decrease. As a result, they are unable to expense any of the much needed supplies for my classroom. I teach students in grades kindergarten to fourth grade with varying disabilities. As a result, there is a large discrepancy in academic ability. Each student receives an individualized education that is tailored to their unique needs. Because of the variety of learners, one curriculum is not conducive to an optimal learning experience.
Hands-on activities reinforce instruction in an engaging way that continues to yield success from all of my students.
The requested products will greatly enhance my current curriculum and provide the students with engaging experiences they so deserve! A large component of my curriculum is literacy. I have students that are non-readers, emergent readers, and students reading at a first grade level. The Language Instant Learning Centers includes activities that are beneficial for students that fall under each category. They provide the students with independent activities that build on beginning language skills.
Math is another major component of my curriculum. Like the language centers, the math centers provide the students with independent activities on measurement, patterning, estimating, and adding to supplement instruction. The pattern block design cards will allow the students to explore patterns and properties of shapes.
In addition to academic skills, I also teach functional skills. Money and computation are very difficult concepts for many of my students. The Restaurant Writing Box reinforces computation in a functional way. Students will be able to choose food to buy, identify the price, and add up the total. This will also help prepare students for community-based trips where they will be able to practice these skills.
Your consideration to this project is greatly appreciated!!
