My Students
My students need current, informational text reading materials that promote conversations, vocabulary-building and build prior knowledge.
My students are learning to read and love to have their own materials to take home for practice.
My classroom has a class library that mainly houses fiction books for independent practice. Scholastic News magazines would provide informational text reading at the first grade level that the students could then take home to share and practice at home. My students love to bring home what they are learning and “teach” their parents!
My Project
Access to Scholastic News magazines will enhance the print-rich environment I am trying to create in my classroom. My students have a classroom library that offers many good, varied level fiction books, but reading materials that use informational text on topics that are if interest and level for first graders are harder to find.
By giving to our project, my students wil be able to read about current, real-world, relevant topics and events.
Daily reading practice is imperative for first graders to become fluent readers. Scholastic News magazines provide weekly reading at the first grade level that can stimulate meaningful conversations and build background knowledge. My students need opportunities to read about topics that interest them and highlight informational text.
