My Students

Have you ever read something that you could not relate to? With engaging and relevant nonfiction text, students will become active and engaged readers!

My students are a pretty diverse group of children who love learning and showing what they know.

Most of them thrive though hands-on learning activities which is why our school has adopted a project-based learning approach. We focus on learning through technology, service learning, and foreign language integration. The students do not use traditional textbooks, but rather pull from many different media resources including trade books, nonfiction text, the Internet, and online modules. The school is three years old and is a magnet school that accepts students from all of the other schools in our city school system.

My Project

My students need 65 subscriptions to TIME for Kids, a weekly news magazine. Having the nonfiction text that students can relate to is essential to student achievement. Our school does not use textbooks and so providing students with other appropriate nonfiction text is crucial. Reading and applying information from nonfiction text has been a weakness for our students on standardized testing. The news magazine TIME for Kids provides an additional resource for teaching students the skills necessary to read and comprehend nonfiction text. It will also provide real-world topics about which students can read, learn, and explore in meaningful conversations. TIME For Kids will not only assist me in teaching my kids how to read nonfiction text but will also help create students who are internationally minded. Through these materials we can teach students about other cultures which in turn will help student better understand others and accept other differences.

Having a resource that will motivate and engage students in the reading process will enable them to develop the necessary skills to successfully read nonfiction text.

They will also be able to read and discuss the current events from around the world.
