Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach all subjects with a knowledge-hungry group of third graders in New York City. Situated in a high poverty area, these kids daily attempt to escape the adversities that are the realities of their lives. Most of these students come to school with no supplies or materials to help them absorb the vast amount of knowledge that the world has to offer.
Many students love to read and learn about what is going on in our world. However, their parents are busy struggling to keep up with buying food or paying the rent that ordering newspapers or magazines is the last thing on their mind.
I would like to supply my students with weekly newspapers called "Scholastic News." They are rich with articles, stories, and test prep reading strategies and questions that my students will benefit for the 3rd grade state English Language Arts (ELA) exam as well as for the rest of their life.
In the past I have tried to collect the subscription fees from each parent but only a small percentage could contribute. The students whose parents could afford it were so enthusiastic and excited about the periodical that they couldn't put it down. And the students whose parents couldn't afford the periodical would watch with sadness. Won't you give the opportunity for all students to read and appreciate the news around us?
