Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Wasn't it great in grade school to be able to learn about current affairs in language you understood! My students need Weekly Readers and Time for Kids to understand the world around them. They know about street life, but, today, to navigate their lives well, they need to know what goes on globally.
My students come from various parts of the world and are learning Academic English with great enthusiasm.
They are loquacious, and inquisitive! Their families cannot afford to provide them with magazines at home but are anxious for them to learn as much English as possible. Our students attend a small, well-loved, inner-city public elementary school that has been in this community for many, many years. Students come from other parts of the city to attend this bilingual school that has a vision of graduating students who are resilient, and culturally aware life-long learners.
My Project
With magazines like Weekly Reader, Weekly Reader's Science Spin, and Time for Kids, my students will share articles that interest each other, read together cooperatively, and learn from each other the strategies to better comprehend a more complex text than simple stories. They will more easily learn the background of current news and scientific research. With this kind of experience, the students will be much better prepared for middle and high school science and social studies classes. They will have a much richer knowledge base for scientific and political issues of the day. The binders I am requesting, will help them to develop organizational skills that will last a lifetime.
My students will also learn cooperation and empathy as they work with each other to better comprehend each article they share. It's exciting to think of them cooperatively discussing important issues and helping one another read and understand the stories that interest them.
Without your support, these students will not have the opportunity to read current events articles at their reading level.
They will be left depending on television news coverage that often scares them and leaves them feeling helpless. These magazines have the potential to empower them with the knowledge and the reading skills to better grapple with the issues they will face in the future. With the binders they will organize the articles and log their responses to the articles.
