Imagine your favorite spot to curl up and read a book.
Now imagine trying to enjoy that book in an unforgiving metal chair. This is what my students are expected to do every school day.
I work at a severely under-resourced school in Brooklyn, NY, where 79% of students qualify for free lunch. For many of my students, the only consistently stable and quiet place to read is in the classroom. However, it is difficult for them to truly lose themselves in their books when they are shifting in their straight-backed metal chairs.
I am wholly dedicated to teaching my students how to read and instilling in them a love for the written word. Because my 9th grade students have reading levels between the 2nd and 12th grades, I do this by ensuring that all of my students read independent books on their level for 35 minutes each day in class. Many of my students who read at lower levels are reluctant readers and see reading as a difficult chore. I tackle part of this issue by helping them find books that interest and challenge them appropriately and by teaching them essential literacy skills. But with your donation, you can help these students as well.
For my project, I need three beanbag chairs and a rug, where students can sit comfortably during independent reading time. These items will form part of the class reading center, where students will have a chance to experience what it means to truly curl up with their favorite book and lose themselves in the world of imagination.
The opportunity to do this is just a step towards cultivating a love for reading. Yet more importantly, a love for reading leads to stronger readers. And as a step towards empowerment for these young people, this experience is invaluable.
