This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As second language learners, many of my students enter my classroom not knowing how to speak any English. What has amazed me year after year, though, is their ability to band together as a family and help one another succeed. The students in my room learn not only Math, Reading, Writing, Science and Social Studies, but they learn how to use their manners, be kind, and help each other no matter what their background story is.
All of my kids have one thing in common though, and that is their love for books.
The students browse through each book basket in the classroom library, and I love watching their faces light up when they find one that looks interesting. Even the struggling students are eager readers, and are very determined to make growth in their reading skills to ensure they can share books with their peers. It is the hard work and perseverance of these students that continue to encourage me to give my all.
My Project
Many of the non-fiction articles about science, animals, and famous people the students have access to have no pictures, fun facts, or colorful illustrations.
My goal is to pique the interest of my students by providing colorful and enticing book choices for a variety of non-fiction topics.
Who-Would-Win? books especially attract the attention of my reluctant readers because the curiosity of who the winner of the battle will always get the best of them.
After experiencing a few of these books that are easier to read and definitely more interesting, I find that my students are more likely to ask for books on the same topic, even if they don't look as appealing, because they already have background knowledge about what interests them.
