Curious George versus Power Rangers

My students need a cozy, comfortable seating in their beloved book nook.

Do you thrill to the smell of new crayons? Can you tie 20 pairs of sneakers in 4 minutes? Can you hold the interest of these same 20 children in the palm of your hand while you read to them? If so...you must be me! I am a Kindergarten teacher in a school where art and music classes happen only if you do it yourself, where there is no librarian (but there is a library,) and most of my students are bused in from local subsidized housing projects.

Each day my students come to my classroom where I try to offer them not only an education, but a chance at a great day! I listen to them talk about video games they want, television shows with amazing graphics, and films that are full of violence and rage. I compete with these influences with....BOOKS! I try to read at least 5 books daily to my children and make sure they have a book to take home with them in the afternoon. Within a small corner of our room I have created their book nook. I have a worn carpet, a rescued-from-the-trash coffee table, an aquarium, and small reproductions from the PMA. The missing piece is seating. Oh they have chairs, but they are the same chairs they use at their desks, hard plastic chairs. I would like them to know the joy of picking a book or two, sitting on a piece of comfortable furniture, and "reading" their book.

We need a child sized sofa and two chairs to allow them to enjoy their books in a safe, warm, inviting space. Many of these children don't have the opportunity to have a quiet moment with a book in a comfortable piece of furniture. My hope is that it will help encourage them to pick up a book more often and that reading is enjoyable. (Basically I am selling reading.)

Each day I battle all of the external opponents my children battle: poverty, violence, gang influence, media influence. Won't you help me to help them learn to love books. It's just that simple.
