This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are creative, playful, and inventive spirits. However, there are many of them who struggle with feeling calm and focused. Some of these students are on the autism spectrum. Some have sensory processing disorder, meaning that their senses are either over-sensitive or under-sensitive, affecting their emotions and behavior, as well as their academics.
My school community is still learning about autism and sensory processing disorder, and it is my hope that I can serve as a model to my coworkers about how to use these types of interventions after they see the success I have with their students.
As the art teacher, I have taught over 1,000 students this year, and have come across more than a few students who would benefit from these kinds of supports.
The backjack chairs will help support students seeking proprioceptive input, who struggle to stay still when sitting in the meeting area. The lap pads are soothing to students with sensory issues and anxiety, as well as the massagers and vibrating pillow.
