Our student population at my school is increasingly diverse, but our educator population is not. As white educators, many of us want to do a better job of supporting our students but we do not have the resources. Our district is woefully behind in providing us with the professional development we need. However, we are committed to doing better for our students and taking care of all of their needs. Our students are the most compassionate, inquisitive, and inspiring of any school I have been in. I am committed to being the best I can for them.
My Project
We will create book clubs to facilitate discussions around culturally responsive teaching. We are an all white teaching staff in an increasingly diverse group of students. A group of us desperately want to do better but need resources to help us grow. These books will allow us to read and have conversations about these practices. In addition, we will turn them into book club kits that we can share with our colleagues at our high school and the lower level schools that feed into our school to help a large variety of students. We are excited to grow in our professional practice and be better educators for our amazing students.
