My Students
While our school is physically located in West Oakland, we are now running instruction online and in homes across Oakland. As a title 1 school, most of my students come from homes dramatically impacted by COVID. We have rallied to provide students with Chromebooks and ensure internet access for families, but supporting students isn't only about access to the internet.
In this unprecedented time, it’s more important than ever to make sure students are provided with opportunities to genuinely connect with each other despite COVID isolation.
These books will help us start a sign language club to support one of our students who is Deaf, and also learning to sign!
My Project
Being a small school, it is often hard to find the resources and services needed to truly provide equitable education. Luckily, we have been blessed with a student who is providing us the opportunity to really push for what it looks like to be an inclusive community.
By starting a Sign Language club, that is centered around the cultural history of my students, we will be directly working on creating an inclusive social and academic community for our Deaf student.
These books will help us start a sign language club to support one of our students who is Deaf, and also learning to sign!
Student's have already expressed excitement and eagerness to learn ASL in order to support the student - now we just need the right tools!
