Our scholars are a diverse, vivacious bunch. They come from various neighborhoods throughout San Francisco to learn in our small school community. Ninety-nine percent of our scholars are students of color and nearly seventy-five percent of them are English Language Learners. All of them are amazing.
Nearly all of our students come to us reading below grade level, but make huge strides each year- some of them four or five grade levels- through their hard work, dedication, and high standards.
My Project
For many of my students, AP Literature and Composition is an immense challenge. The volume of vocabulary they need to sift through while learning critical analysis skills makes this course one of the toughest out there. When students do not feel connected to a text, they are more likely to give up when things get hard.
By incorporating more engaging, culturally relevant texts, the analytical skills of the course will be more accessible to my students.
These texts offer two very different motivating factors in keeping my students engaged and focused: Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest will provide them with the exposure to late nineteenth-century style, while also making them laugh. Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima will give my predominately Latinx students an opprotunity to see themselves reflected in Literature.
