These books will promote literacy by offering inclusive titles for students to develop critical thinking skills. All of our students have the ability to be community activists. In this unit, students will research the civil rights movement followed with a literature circle. These coming of age novels will allow my students access a book they want to continue developing their ideals of becoming an anti racist. They will learn to be gold miners as they search for literary gold within these novels. This project will be the culminating project of the year. They will continue growth with reading, analyzing the text, social emotional skills, speaking skills, and writing analysis with references to the text. These novels will help my students think critically about racism and form their own opinions about how to take action moving forward into their adolescent lives.
