Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever read a book where you connected so much to the characters, and felt that you saw yourself in the book? What if you had never read a book where you saw yourself reflected in the characters and the story?

My 4th grade students are a very diverse group who love learning and reading out loud.

More than 60% of my students are English Language Learners, with Spanish being the primary language; however, there are more than 7 languages spoken in my classroom alone. All of my students have a thirst for knowledge and they love fiction stories-although the rarely see themselves reflected in the books.

My Project

With these books, Drita, My Homegirl and Dancing Home, my students will be able to accomplish the regular reading activities: comparing and contrasting characters, finding details in the text, making inferences, identifying point of view and summarizing. However, with these specific books, my students will be able to really connect to the text because the books hold characters that are from the same culture and background as themselves. Students will then be able to make the meaning of the novels relevant to themselves and the lives of their peers around them, forming deeper connections to others in the classroom.

This project will improve my classroom in that students will be able to see themselves in the books.

This allows students to make a deeper connection to the text and possibly help inspire in them a deeper love of reading. When students are able to see themselves in the classroom through their academic materials, they can feel more valued as a student and as a person. Not only will students be able to excel academically, they will learn to embrace their culture and others in a meaningful way.
