Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students come from a variety of countries, cultures, and home languages. As a dual language music teacher, I teach songs and stories in both English and Spanish. My students love to use literature as a jumping-off point for making music - finding the rhythms of the text, composing their own melodies, and enhancing their reading comprehension through music. I would love to have more books that lend themselves to music-making so that I can engage my students in these hands-on activities!
As a dual language school, access to authentic music from Latin American composers and musicians is critical.
That is why in addition to musical books, we also need authentic song compilations from other countries. We need more resources written by and collected by culture-bearers - people from the culture of the music they write and record. These resources will allow my students to learn music and culture from a more equitable perspective, in both English and Spanish.
