My Students
My students come from various backgrounds and bring so much to our classroom. They are students who are making the transition to high school while dealing with real life issues. Their families live in poverty stricken urban areas. As a teacher I have to get students motivated. I do this with the texts I bring into the classroom and the learning activities we complete. My students are determined to be the first in their families to graduate high school and attend college. Many of my students know that hard work is the only way they can make their goals reality. We are a school that believes that education really is the great equalizer. Our students embody the character and determination of the man we are named after, Frederick Douglass.
My Project
Students will be able to learn about the Native American culture in the United States. It is important that my students learn about various cultures and identities beyond their own. "The True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" is a graphic novel that allows students to truly understand a young person's struggle with cultural norms, stereotypes, and the want to excel in society despite his difficult home life. This book will help my students prepare for the NYC Regents exam by lending its themes for Text Analysis essays. This book will allow students to see how profoundly connected our world is.
