Cultural Journey Through World Drumming

My students need five five-piece sets of drums and ten pairs of finger cymbals.

I am a new teacher in an inner-city elementary public school, home of 700 students (pre-K through 8th grade). This is my second year teaching general music at our school and although I have gotten a few instrument donations, I am still missing too many things to provide my students with the music program they deserve.

My students are wild about drums! They are always making up rhythms and playing them by beating on their desks or clapping their hands. They are always asking if we could get drums and play together. I would like to teach them about drumming from around the world and I have even found professionals to come in and help us put together and assembly featuring the students' drum ensemble but.... we don't have any drums!

In order for this project to happen we need five, five-piece sets of hand drums and ten pairs of finger cymbals. With these instruments we will be able to take a journey around the world and explore drumming techniques from Portugal, Cuba, Romania, Guinea, Ghana, Japan, North America, Turkey, Thailand, and Egypt. We will learn about each country's culture and specifically its music by playing traditional drum rhythms.

Your help will provide my students with the experience of a lifetime to take a cultural journey around the globe through music. My students have few opportunities to break free from their neighborhood and explore other places and cultures; by helping us make this project possible you will open their ears to new music and help them realize that the world doesn't stop outside the limits of the city!
