This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Let's build a bridge! Middle school students experience subjects being taught in isolation for the first time in their education, but we all know that real life skills in math and science aren't used in isolation. Literature is the ideal vehicle to help students become writers in math and science.
As part of an inner city community, my students are an inspiration!
Although 100% of the scholars are from low-income families, and qualify for the free lunch program, many work hard to achieve academic success in hope for a better future. Middle school in South L.A. isn't easy! My students are in the middle of searching for their identities, and being an excellent student is difficult when you are exposed to violence and crime in your everyday life. However, my students never cease to amaze me...they truly have a desire to learn.
My Project
Our classroom needs heavy duty pencil sharpeners for writing, and math and science themed literature books. When we receive these resources, students will be able to learn math and science in context and bridge their learning through writing. For some, math and science make complete sense in isolation. But for most, the skills and concepts need to be taught with relevance to their everyday lives. Literature will allow my students to make connections to their lives but also understand the importance of expressing their new knowledge through writing, and will be able to take ownership of their education.
Ralph Ellison once said that, "education is a all a matter of building bridges".
Help these inspirational students build their own bridges of understanding in math and science through literature and writing!
