Cultivating Readers with Books to Read at Home

My Students

The students in my kindergarten class come from all nationalities, backgrounds, and support systems at home. Many have single or divorced parents, two homes that they travel back and forth to/from, and many of their parents are just trying to make ends meet. My students love read-aloud time at school. It is a time when we listen, laugh and learn together, when unreachable worlds are explored, vocabulary is expanded, characters become our friends and allies, lessons are learned, and hearts are knit together. Besides playing, they love to get out those well-loved books and "read" in their free time. But they are missing that opportunity at home because many of their homes do not have books.

I would love to give each student in my class the opportunity to start their own library of books they can take home, love, and read over and over again.

COVID has lessened families' budgets for books even more. With a book a month, each child could have their own library of 10 books to keep, read and love, and as kindergartners, that's a great foundation with which to begin the love of reading!

My Project

Many of the children in my class do not have books to read at home, and families' budgets for books have gotten even tighter because of COVID-19. By giving each student a book a month for the year, each child will start this first year of school with 10 new books to enhance their library at home.

Students and parents alike will have the opportunity to practice English and reading skills, enhance vocabulary, explore new worlds, characters and life lessons, and build a relationship with books and each other through reading together.
