Cultivating Literacy in Our Special Education Classroom

My Project

Our moderate special education classroom serves 12-15 bright and eager students with diverse learning needs. These students, ranging in age and ability, benefit from individualized instruction and a supportive learning environment. Many of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, which often limits their access to enriching literacy resources at home.

A well-equipped classroom library is crucial for fostering a love of reading, developing essential literacy skills, and providing accessible learning opportunities for all our students.

Currently, our classroom book collection is limited and does not adequately address the wide range of reading levels and developmental needs present in our classroom. We have students who are just beginning to explore books and learn proper handling techniques, while others are developing early reading skills at a picture book to second-grade level.
