My Students

My English Language Learning students struggle daily between assimilating and acculturating. Through reading I want my students to really have the opportunity to appreciate their identity, their roots, their personal cultures as well as the various cultures represented at our school.

My English Language Learners are in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

They attend a wonderful public middle school. My particular students are level 1 and 2 readers. These students are a variety of cultures. Some of the students have been in the U.S.A their whole life just visiting their native lands, others have migrated back and forth between the two lands and some have recently immigrated to our country. Many of my students parents are non-english speaking or have limited abilities. The students do a lot of translating for their non-english speaking family members. These students are a real inspiration for their families and for their teachers to become more acculturated. I love learning first hand about the different languages and cultures of my students.

My Project

I have requested three novels that tell very interesting cultural based stories. This project is targeting students identified as being part of the lowest 30% of our middle school learners. The creation of this novel study project will engage my students in activities that incorporate Bloom's Taxonomy. I will also have the greatest opportunity to instill an appreciation for authors and recognition of the awesome power of reading. This innovative project will allow my students to engage Multi-intelligences while receiving instruction that parallels the state standards for reading. During the project, "I do, we do, you do," lessons will be implemented. The students will will be required to meet with their families throughout the course of the project find out more information about their family and heritage. In turn this will solidify the family, student, and school connection. The involvement of the parents of our ELL students will help to bridge the gap created by the language.

This novel study project will enhance our standard classroom activities by creating an exciting reading environment.

Through the amazing novels the students will identify author's purpose, tone, point of view, cause/effect, compare/contrast, main idea, supporting details, complex plot elements, character development, figurative language, reference/research skills and the writing process. Students will increase their grade point averages, standardized test scores, and a joy of reading.
