Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, "The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination." I believe that students should have multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge. I want to integrate art into our classroom to meet the diverse needs of all my students.
I have an energetic group of sixth graders that I work diligently to motivate and inspire to work to their full potential.
I try to plan activities that will keep the students actively engaged in their learning. Research has shown that art integration enhances students' ability to read, write, and speak. I want to empower students through art.
My Project
We will use the paint and construction paper to create portraits, story maps, and props for the reader's theater. Students will also paint murals, dioramas, and create sculptures to demonstrate their understanding of abstract concepts or comprehension of the novels.
Art integration uses practices that have been shown in brain based research to improve comprehension, and long term retention.
The other advantages of infusing art into the curriculum are increased motivation, concentration, confidence, and communication.
