My Project
My students last year were the first children to interact with our young guinea pigs. Helen is both blind and deaf, caused by a gene mutation called Lethal White. I chose to adopt her (rather than return her to the pet store) to give her the best life possible. I went back and got her a mate to help her navigate her environment. Annie has been wonderful with her and with our students.
I was amazed at how my students took on responsibilities to care for the "girls," stepping up when they saw a need and volunteering to stay after to clean the cage and feed their pets.
They encouraged each other to be gentle and caring. They brought fruits and vegetables to share at snack time, read to the guinea pigs, and shared in their snuggle time. The students read to the guinea pigs and were inspired to do a science research project about guinea pigs.
I am seeking donations for a classroom habitat to replace one that is not safe enough for Helen, food bowls, water bottles, food and hay, liners and bedding, and a "potty" spot. With Helen's weak immune system, she battles infections continuously. There are continuous vet bills, and she needs a large, safe, clean habitat that she can navigate with access to food and water in separate places. .
The guinea pigs have been a beloved and important part of our students' lives. Our students have demonstrated compassion, gentleness, self-control, and responsibility in caring for them.
As next year's class prepares to come to third grade, last year's students are developing leadership as they are the experts on how to care for Helen and Annie. I appreciate any donations towards the guinea pigs' continued care and support..
