This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education,” Martin Luther King, Jr.

I aim to help my students own the skills and confidence to realize their dreams.

I want them to dream big. The elementary school I work in has about 400 students, most of whom come from low-income families of various backgrounds.

I teach in Spanish bilingual classrooms where more than 90% of students are English Language Learners. Some of my students are also not proficient in Spanish. They often come with low reading and writing scores in Spanish and English. Many of the students are not yet independent thinkers and have difficulty articulating their thoughts both orally and in writing. Often they lack the confidence to problem solve and defend their thinking in both languages. Additionally, they are often intimidated by English. My goal is to show them all they can do in both languages.

My Project

Due to distance learning my students do not have access to our regular Art teacher and the supplies she brings. We usually get 8 weeks of art for an hour a week each year. Especially for students who are visual or kinesthetic learners, art can be a great way to get students engaged in the learning process. Our school has asked us to submit some art work for a virtual Winter Festival/Art Show so that parents can feel more connected to the community. My students have started a diorama of an animal habitat. I would like to have them paint the habitat and create a background painting to make the diorama look more realistic. Our theme is Take care of our earth.
