Cultivating A Love For Literacy Through Engaging Spanish Texts

My students need engaging texts in Spanish that allow them to strengthen their literacy skills while growing their love for reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Dos idiomas son dos alas, y con dos puedo volar" - Bob Gomez. This quote, from one of our school's favorite songs, highlights our philosophy - "Two languages are two wings, and with two wings I can fly". I have the honor of teaching a group of gregarious, curious and thoughtful 3rd graders who take huge pride in being bilingual, biliterate and bicultural.

They are college bound superstars who love reading (in Spanish and English), especially when it includes fun and engaging texts, hands-on activities, and friendly competition.

90% of my students are Latino/a and most speak Spanish at home. Most of my students come from low-income backgrounds - 80% qualify for free and reduced lunch. However, despite difficulties they may face at home and in their neighborhoods (single family homes, gang activity, financial struggles), they come to school with a fervor for learning that inspires me every day.

My students have big personalities and big dreams to match. Having more resources at their fingertips will help them to achieve their goals and change the world like I know they can.

My Project

Finding bilingual resources is always more of a challenge, and it has been a struggle to acquire texts in Spanish. My students love to read, but are unfortunately limited in choices when it comes to books in Spanish. It's important for them to see equal representation of English and Spanish choices when they are choosing a book.

The majority of my students read below grade level, so providing them with books that they will be excited to read is crucial to their success.

Having more books available to them will allow them to strengthen their literacy skills while their love for reading grows.

The resources included in this project include books that vary in genre and level. Many of the books are popular chapter books that my students cannot seem to put down. Other books included in this project are equally as exciting, but more suitable for beginning readers. Also included in this project are books that I will be able to read aloud to the class. Read alouds are incredibly powerful for teaching metacognitive thinking, building community and fostering a love for reading. Some of these books include culturally relevant texts that my students will be able to relate to.

This project not only benefits students at school, but will allow them to further their learning at home. Students will be able to borrow books from our classroom library so they can read at home in Spanish with their loved ones.
