Culminating Our First Book Club with a Local Field Trip
Help me give my students a memorable, earned group showing of the movie made based on the books we raised money to purchase, are reading for our book club and discussing directly with the author, Angie Thomas.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This fall, our high school is rolling out our Project Lit Book Club Chapter. When you are an Abe, you are part of the family, the Abe Nation. We are going to open up this club opportunity to any students who'd like to participate. Our school has a tradition of pride and excellence as well as a tight-knit community. We want to have an open dialogue about topics important to us and our world. We want to connect with making a positive change and impact, starting with our community.
My Project
Our students are reading The Hate U Give for our first book club selection. This book is ripe with engaging, current topics that propel rich discussion centered about recent events and dialogue on social justice. Our book club is a chapter of a national book club, whose founding members have negotiated a discounted cost to all Project Lit book club chapters, the critically acclaimed movie will be released nation-wide, and we want to experience the viewing of this ground-breaking movie as a group activity. We will have the opportunity to meet the author via Skype and discuss the details of her book, her career as an author, the process she went through writing and releasing the book and selling the rights for a movie. Our students will be able to ask her questions and tell her what they thought of both the book and the movie!
