My Project
My students have been impacted by COVID-19 and the lack of in-person learning through not engaging in hands-on and experiential learning. Many of my students are lacking the real-life skills needed to be an independent adult in today's society due to COVID-19. These real-life skills include cooking, cleaning, communication, leadership, teamwork, time management, and creativity. Through Family and Consumer Sciences, it is my job to teach my students real-life skills. Now that my students are back at school and eager to jump back into hands-on learning, I want to provide them with the supplies they need to be creative in the classroom and in the kitchen. My two main focuses in my classroom are safety and creativity. In order for my culinary students to practice kitchen safety (including preventing food-borne illnesses) I am requesting food thermometers for them to check the internal temperature of foods. I am also requesting aprons so my students are wearing safe cooking lab attire. In order for my students to practice time management, I am requesting kitchen timers. For my students to serve food at catering events for our school and practice teamwork and leadership, I am requesting crockpots and a coffee urn to keep their catered food warm. For my design seminar students, I am requesting colored pencils, hole punches, and light boxes for them to foster creativity when creating interior design floor plans. I am additionally requesting large envelopes for my students to create a final portfolio in which they will present their culinary and design creations over the school year in order to showcase their creativity, leadership, and communication.
