My Students
I teach Culinary Arts in an inner-city Title I high school. The students come from varying backgrounds, many riddled with drugs, generational poverty, and domestic violence.
Many of my students have very limited "real world" experiences, especially when it comes to food.
My goal for them is to learn their way around a kitchen and to be able to provide for their families.
Our school system sees the value in Career Technical Education (CTE) and is building more programs to prepare these students to be successful beyond high school. Through CTE classes, these students are able to obtain valuable skills that will benefit as they enter the workforce.
My Project
On October 10, 2018 Hurricane Michael devastated Bay County Florida. Many of my students suffered the total loss of home and belongings. While this loss was hard, for most of those students school, and particularly the culinary program, were a safe haven for them day to day. Our school suffered such substantial damage that we are temporarily located on a middle school campus where my classes meet in the cafeteria.
The addition of a portable induction range will allow my students those hands on experiences they crave and not just the book work we’re able to do now.
Being able to cook not only provides my students an escape from the tedious book work, but also gives them a valuable survival skill.
